WASHINGTON, D.C.(WNAX)- While Senate negotiators say they have reached agreement on the outlines of a gun safety bill, the final outcome will depend on the details.
South Dakota Senator John Thune says to be successful a bill will have to directly address the problem.
The bill would focus on mental health resources and keep the mentally ill and dangerous criminals from getting guns.
Thune says trying to limit gun ownership would be very difficult.
Thune says Congress may ultimately give much of the authority over gun legislation to the states.
The proposal would provide an enhanced review process for gun buyers under the age of twenty one and include a “red flag” provision.
