Senator Mary Duvall preview the upcoming redistricting committee meeting on August 30th

PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- The first numbers from the 2020 U-S Census were released late last week.  The numbers were released on the county level.  Hughes County has 17,765 residents which is up 4.4 percent from the 2010 Census.  Stanley County is at 2,980 residents; up .5 percent.  Sully County is up 5.3 percent at 1446 and Hyde County is down 11 percent 1262; a loss of 158 residents.  Senator Mary Duvall says District 24 will likely look different than its current make-up.

The current District 24 total is 23,453.  The average population per Senate District is 25,333.  Duvall says one thing the Senate and House Redistricting Committees want to avoid is splitting counties up.

Duvall says overall the numbers released were as expected.

More information on the 2020 South Dakota redistricting can be found on the South Dakota Legislative Research Council website.  The next Redistricting Committee meeting is August 30th at 10 am in the State Capitol in Pierre.
