WASHINGTON, D.C.(WNAX)- South Dakota Senator John Thune is co-sponsoring a bill that would end what he calls unnecessary student loan deferments.

The Biden Administration has halted student loan payments for over a year and may consider a complete loan forgiveness program.

Thune, in a speech on the Senate floor, says his bill would better target loan paybacks.

Thune says the student loan givebacks shouldn’t be on the backs of taxpayers.

Thune says cancelling student loan debt would also have a big impact on the already high inflation rate.
