SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Press Release) – A Sioux Falls man has been identified as the person who died Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash west of Sioux Falls.
A 2000 Lexus SUV was southbound on LaMesa Drive and failed to stop at the intersection of South Dakota Highway 38. It collided with a 2013 Honda Pilot that was eastbound on South Dakota Highway 38. Both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch.
Alonso Chavez, the 34-year-old driver of the Lexus SUV, was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelly Carlson of Hartford, S.D., the 52-year-old driver of the Honda Pilot, was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries. She was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital by private vehicle.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
