SIOUX FALLS, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – After the Aberdeen Smittys swept the Spearfish squad in two games by a combined three runs on Friday, they dropped a doubleheader against Harrisburg Gold on Sunday, 9-6 in game one & 9-3 in game two.
Harrisburg Gold still remains unbeaten now in league play, sitting at 16-0, the best in the state of South Dakota.
In game one it was a heavyweight battle; the Smittys and the Gold battled, blow for blow. Two for the Smittys in the first, two for the Gold in the bottom of the frame. The Smittys put up three in the second and then the Gold responded with two in the third & four in the fourth. Ultimately, the Gold proved to be too much winning the ball game 9-6. Drew Salfrank took the loss in relief, going just an inning and surrendering four earned runs. Cooper Eisenbeisz went three innings and struck out two,, while scattering four hits & four earned runs.
On offense, the Smittys got two RBI days from Casey Vining and Phillip Zens. Zens was 3-5, while Vining was 1-4 with a run scored.
In game two, it was a bit more one sided. The Gold took a commanding 6-0 lead into the fourth inning. The Smittys chipped away at the deficit, but it proved to be too much. Lance Siefken went 1-3 with a pair of RBI + Jackson Welke went 1-3 with a run scored and a run driven in.
Charlie Phillips took the hill in game two, taking the loss; he went three innings and surrendered eight hits and six earned runs, while walking three and striking out a pair.
The Smittys drop to 31-17 and have two pivotal games on Monday afternoon against Brandon Valley at 3p/5p down south. Brandon Valley currently sits in the #10 spot in the state, while the Smittys sit in the #7 seed, with the matchups on Monday being the final two games in the regular season.
