ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – High school baseball is back Aberdeen & so is the Aberdeen Smittys offense.
The Aberdeen Smittys dominated Rapid City on Sunday night at Fossum Field in a doubleheader, winning 23-8 in game one & then 20-5 in game two.
It was a slow start in game one, as the Smittys trailed 3-0 after the first half inning, but didn’t waste any time getting back into the game with their dominant offense & a few errant pitches & passed balls by the Rapid City catcher.
The Smittys offense would explode for nine runs in the bottom of the third & then put up a crooked 10-spot in the bottom of the fourth for the run rule victory.
Michael Dutenhoffer went 3-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored & 4RBI. Jehiel Aviles drove in four and was also 3-4 at the dish with two runs scored. Ridley Waldo also drove in three, in the effort.
In game two, the Smittys led 13-3 after the first inning and never looked back. Brayden Bowman picked up the victory on the hill, going two innings and scattered three hits, four earned runs and also struck out three. In relief, Donnie Soderlund fanned a pair of batters over two innings.
Jehiel Aviles & Karson Borge both drove in four runs and Jackson Ladner drove in three in the four inning run rule victory.
Skipper Nathan Gonnelly was impressed with the way the Smittys came out to open the season, “these guys did great, we watched the ball fly a little bit and we made great plays defensively; we had pitchers go out there & do their job…it was a good day.”
In the postgame discussion, Ryan Martin was impressed with lead off man, Jehiel Aviles. Gonnelly says he’s going to be a really good player: “he’s a great team guy, too. He always comes in with a smile on his face and gets the boys ready, he had an outstanding night, too.”
The Smittys open the season 2-0 & they’re back in action on Thursday in the capital city against Pierre.
