Despite a great all around pitching performance, The Smittys fell to Groton, 5-3 in 11 innings.
Groton opened the scoring in the first after Colby Dunker singled, scoring one run. An error extended the Groton Post 39 lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning.
Jared Klootwyk was spectacular on the mound in relief. He went 5 innings, struck out three, and didn’t allow a run.
The late rally started in the eighth for the Smittys, as Phillip Zens hit an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 2-2. Zens, Drew Salfrank, and Casey Vining all had RBIs for the Smittys in the contest. Salfrank also was aggressive on the base paths, as the speedster had three stolen bases.
After both teams were held scoreless the next couple innings, Post 39 captured the lead, 5-2, in the top of the eleventh. Post 39 put up a three-spot in the inning and held on to win, 5-3.
With the loss, the Smittys are 25-11 and will travel to Huron Post 7 for a doubleheader Tuesday. 5p and 7p are the scheduled game times from Huron.
