SIOUX FALLS, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – The Aberdeen Smittys saw their 14 game winning streak come to an end over the weekend in Sioux Falls & then made their next opponents pay for it.
The Smittys dropped their first two games of the weekend tournament, falling to Buffalo, MN on Friday 8-6 and then dropping a 5-2 decision on Saturday morning to Yankton Post 12. Head Coach Nathan Gonnelly put things into perspective, “…Our pitchers did a great job of throwing strikes and our offense did an outstanding job of manufacturing runs (in games three & four). If a couple of things would’ve went our way, I think there would’ve been some different outcomes; but that’s the beauty of baseball.”
After those first two losses, the Smittys dug in and then dismantled their next two opponents. In their third game of the tournament, this time on Saturday afternoon, Aberdeen drubbed Sioux Falls Post 15 for the fifth time this season, 14-0 the final score. Joran Foss picked up the victory on the mound; he scattered three hits over three & two thirds innings of work and also fanned three. At the dish, Grant Beyer went 2-3 and scored three times, plus plated a pair of his teammates. Zane Backous also went 2-3, crossed home plate twice and drove in two.
In their fourth and final game of the tournament on Sunday afternoon, the Smittys went out on a high note, defeating Omaha Central 11-1 in five innings. Zane Backous pitched four innings and gave up just two hits & one earned run. He also helped his cause at the plate, going 3-4 with a run scored and five runs driven in.
Nathan Gonnelly reflected on the weekend that was in Sioux Falls, “Overall it was a fun weekend…now we’re looking ahead to Brookings and Pierre on Tuesday and Wednesday.” With the 2-2 weekend away from home, the Smittys now sit at 18-5 overall. They’ll be back at home against the Bandits of Brookings Post 74 at 5 & 7p on Tuesday night; that twinbill will be broadcast on HubCityRadio.com.
