ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – On Monday afternoon from Fossum Field, the Aberdeen Smittys dropped a twinbill against Brookings, falling 15-8 in game one & then 13-2 in game two.

In game one, the Smittys pitching staff had a tough day at the office; trailing 5-0 after the game’s first half inning. Brayden Bowman got the start on the hill, going three innings, surrendering just three hits, but also struggled with control, walking seven Brookings batters. In the contest, he also gave up seven runs, but only two of them were earned, as the Smittys defense struggled in the field, with six errors.

Even with the rough defensive & pitching performance, Aberdeen’s offense still clawed their way back into the contest. The Smittys put up a four spot in the fourth inning to tie things up at seven apiece. However, Brookings responded with four of their own in the top of the 5th & added more insurance in the sixth & seventh innings. Karson Borge went 2-5 with a pair of RBI in the seven run loss.

In the second game, the Smittys struck first in the bottom of the first inning after an error by the right fielder which plated Jehiel Aviles; but that would be the final time Aberdeen would lead for the rest of the game. Brookings promptly struck for four runs in the second & then added three runs in the third, fifth & seventh innings, respectively, en route to the 13-2 win & sweep of Aberdeen. Six different Smittys hurlers combined for the days’ efforts, surrendering eight hits, thirteen runs (all earned) and also struggling with control, giving up twelve walks in the 11 run loss.

Following the loss head coach Nathan Gonnelly shared his thoughts about the doubleheader, “we saw a whole lot of walks…I think these losses teach us a lot about the culture of our program and where these boys want to be at. We talked to ‘em (afterwards) and said, ‘what are we made of? Do we want to be a top five team? Or do we want to be in the middle?’…This is a wake up call for us, a necessary evil…I’m excited to see how the boys respond & can’t wait to see what they can do this weekend.”

The Smittys hit the road this upcoming weekend to battle the Titans of Tea Area on Saturday at 2:30p & then Stevens at 5p. Aberdeen will battle those same two squads on Sunday, starting with Stevens at 11a & then Tea at 1:30p.
