ABERDEEN, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – In the legion season opener for the Aberdeen Smittys on Wednesday night at Fossum Field, it was a rough outing for the home squad as Watertown Post 17 took it to Aberdeen 18-2 in game one & coming up just short in game two, falling 5-4.

In the first of two games, the Post 17 squad hit for 12 runs in the top of the first inning and put the ballgame on ice early. Aberdeen starting hurler Joe Cogley struggled on the hill, surrendering four hits, eight runs, seven of them earned, while walking three and only registering one out before Head Coach Nathan Gonnelly was forced to go to the bullpen. In long form relief, Ridley Waldo went two and two third innings and scattered nine hits, ten runs, but only two of them were earned; Waldo also fanned three. The Smittys defense struggled in the field, committing four errors & the Post 17 squad made them pay, in the 18-2 five inning shortened affair. On offense the Smittys did get a RBI batted in from Waldo (who went 1-2) + Jared Klootwyk, who was 1-2 at the plate.

After a non-competitive first game, game two started off rocky and looked like it’d be another long day, but the Smittys made a game of it. Trailing 4-0 after the top half of the first inning, the Smittys would chip away, putting up one run in the third & fourth to trim the deficit to two. Watertown would add one run of insurance in the fifth; Aberdeen struck back with two in the bottom of the sixth, but that’s as close as Aberdeen would get. The Smittys went down in order 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh and couldn’t get a base runner and fell 5-4.

Aberdeen returns to the diamond on Thursday & Friday at five and seven in the evening, against Post 320 in Rapid City.
