BRANDON, SD (HubCityRadio.com) – The Aberdeen Smittys finished up their regular season on Monday night from Brandon with a split; falling in game one, 10-5 & then coming back with a resounding 11-6 win in game two.

In the first game of two, Brandon Valley jumped out to an 8-1 lead going into the fifth inning & the Smittys didn’t have enough offense to come back from the seven run hole. Zane Backous picked up the loss, going two and a third innings, surrendering five hits and five runs, two of them earned; while striking out three. On offense, Jackson Welke had a two RBI single & Cooper Eisenbeisz crossed home plate twice, going 1-3 at the plate.

Following the loss, the Smittys got off to a slow start in game two, trailing 3-0 going into the third and then the offense would erupt. Aberdeen put up five runs in the top of the third & they’d never trail again for the rest of the game. Up 5-3 in the fifth, the Smittys would add more insurance, putting up one in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Casey Vining earned the win on the mound, going five strong innings and striking out five while surrendering a pair of earned runs. He helped his cause at the dish, going 2-4 with a run scored & three runs batted in + a HR. Grant Beyer and Zane Backous also drove in a pair of their teammates, while Phillip Zens and Brendan Livermont each had a(n) RBI, too.

With the Monday split, the Aberdeen Smittys wrap up the regular season at 32-18 and head into the playoffs as the #7 seed. They’ll be back in action on Thursday afternoon [time still TBD]; they’ll take on the same Brandon Valley squad in a best two-out-of-three series. The winner of the series will advance to the state tournament.
