YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – There have been numerous stories of schools “lunch shaming” kids who have past due bills and not allowing them to eat. Some schools are getting around that by paying the entire cost of school meals.
Yankton School Superintendent Wayne Kindle says it is an interesting idea.
Kindle says they do struggle at times to collect from all students that owe for meals.
The school board heard a report from Food Service Director Sandi Kramer that they served over 11,000 meals during the summer. Kindle says they know the need is there.
Kindle says it would take a significant budget adjustment to move toward a free lunch.
