South Dakota 2019 Leopold Winner Practices No Till

YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem announced that Johnson Farms of Frankfort in Spink County has been selected for the 2019 South Dakota Leopold Conservation Award. The award recognizes private landowners who inspire others with their dedication to the land, water, and wildlife resources in their care. Brian Johnson says they practice no till on their crop land and incorporate their Angus Beef Cattle.

He says their rotation of corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and barley helps them leave crop residue in place, minimizes runoff and naturally eases pest management and provide wildlife habitat.

Johnson says the whole system works well for his family and several of his neighbors also practice no till in order to leave a positive environmental footprint.

He says he and his fellow producers learn from each other and are constantly talking about their farming and ranching methods and efforts to protect the environment while remaining profitable.
