South Dakota counties and Tribes now able to upload local winter road condition updates into SD511

PIERRE, S.D.(DRGNews)- Travelers who use the SD511 system to check for current road conditions on state and federal roadways are now able to see some of that same kind of information for many counties and most of the Tribes in South Dakota.

State Department of Transportation Director of Operations Craig Smith says the SD511 system is updated year-round and is accessible multiple ways.

Smith says they are currently partnered with 60 of the state’s 66 counties and eight of the nine Tribes to allow them to input current conditions in their jurisdictions this winter.

However, Smith says, the information provided by counties and Tribes won’t be as detailed as the information SDDOT provides for state and federal roadways.

Smith says people can subscribe to receive text messages and/or email notifications for road closure updates and travel advisories on Interstate 29 and Interstate 90 in South Dakota. Text “SDinterstates” to 605-836-8836. Other points to note are:

  • Information will not be shared about state highways through this text/email service.
  • This text/email notification system sends out information, but is not able to receive Messages sent to this number will receive an automated response encouraging them to use SD511 for the latest road conditions.
  • This is a free service, and subscribers can unsubscribe at any time.
  • SD511 is the best source of information for “no travel advisories” or other road condition information on state and federal roadways in South Dakota.
