PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The South Dakota Highway Patrol is gearing for the holiday driving season with Christmas and New Year’s approaching. Trooper Karlea Larson says the extra traffic can cause extra distractions.
The Highway Patrol will be joining forces this year with local law enforcement for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign focusing on impaired driving enforcement.
While the weather for the Christmas holiday is looking good with little to no precipitation, Larson says it’s important to be mindful of winter weather during the holiday driving season.
The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign runs from now until January 1st. The 2021 Christmas holiday driving season is 78-hours long from six P-M on Thursday December 23rd through Sunday December 26th at midnight. During the 2020 Christmas holiday reporting period, 162 traffic crashes were reported with two fatalities and 139 injuries.
