South Dakota House defeat HB1124

PIERRE, S.D.(HubCityRadio)- The South Dakota House debated HB1124.  The bill establish the crime of trespass upon a place of worship, provide a penalty therefor, and declare an emergency.

Prime sponsor of the bill was District 3 Representative Brandei Schaefbauer.

Schaefbauer discuss the intent of the bill.

Among those that spoke against the bill was Representative Terri Jorgenson of Rapid City.  She felt concern about the bill going too far.

Representative John Hughes of Sioux Falls was concern about the wording of the bill.

Representative Peri Pourier of Rapid City also opposed the bill.  She was on the House Judiciary Committee that heard the bill on Monday and voted in favor then.  She talked about why she was switching her vote now.

Representative Schaefbauer was allow to rebut what was said.  She talks about the focus should remain political.

Schaefbauer believes what happened in Minnesota could happen here in the state of South Dakota.

Needing 2/3 to pass with the emergency clause, instead 2/3 voted against the bill.  The margin was 48-21 defeating the bill.

Meanwhile, the South Dakota Senate voted 30-4 to pass SB113(Governor’s bill) which increase the penalty for preventing practice of religion.
