PIERRE, S.D.(SDBA) – An Aberdeen-area Republican wants to give landlords more control over their residential properties.
But that control would ultimately come at the expense of tenants, opponents of Senate Bill 89 argue.
The State Senate advanced Sen. Michael Rohl’s proposal Thursday to cut the required notice of eviction for “at will” tenants in half, from one month to 15 days. At will tenants are those who have not determined a set length of time for their lease.
Senator Rohl explains the purpose of the bill.
Under the legislation, at will renting of commercial properties would not change – and still would require a 30 days notice.
Though the legislation failed to garner even one Republican vote in opposition on its way out of the Senate, it is staunchly opposed by a west river tenants rights advocacy group, and Democrats.
Sioux Falls Democrat Reynold Nesiba explains how this would impact his city.
Sen. Shawn Bordeaux of Mission talks about trailers in his community.
Senator Rohl countered those claims.
The four Senate Democrat’s opposition was not enough to stimey the bills progress, as it now heads off for consideration in the State House.
