South Dakota Stockgrowers Association react to pending new meatpacking plant in the Black Hills

RAPID CITY, S.D.(KOTA)- With a $1.1 billion meatpacking facility proposed for the Rapid City area, local cattle producers are assessing what it could mean for their ranches.

James Halverson, executive director of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, said he’s feeling “cautiously optimistic” about the project.

Halverson said he believes the project would be a net positive for South Dakota cattle producers.

Halverson, referencing the Cattle Market Transparency Act, said the concerns of cattle country are making their way to DC.

Halverson said the SDSGA is “thankful” for the work being done by the South Dakota Congressional delegation.
