South Dakota Transportation Commission approve renaming bridges in honor of fallen South Dakotans

PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The South Dakota Transportation Commission has approved a list of 12 highway structures to carry the names of 15 fallen South Dakota service members.  The bridge namings are a part of the state Fallen Heroes program between the Transportation Department and Departments of the Military and Veterans Affairs.

Christina Bennett with the D-O-T says all the agencies work with approved families to find the right bridge.

Bennett says this year, two sets of fallen brothers will be honored.

Sgt. Dennis D. Lawver will be recognized with a bridge named in his honor on Highway 45 over Crow Creek, 18 miles south of Miller.  Lawver was killed on May 1st in 1968 in hostile ground action in Veitnam.
