PIERRE, S.D.(KCCR)- The Capitol Complex Restoration And Beautification Commission approved the replacement of the roof of the State Capitol building Wednesday. Kristine Day with the Office of the State Engineer says officials were already planning to replace portions of the roof to address water leakage into the Capitol.
On July 18th Pierre was pounded by massive hail stones and Day showed Commission members a photo of with hundreds of hail dents on the copper roofing panels. Day says they want to use a rubber shingle to replace the low-pitched portions of the roof.
Day says durability was only one consideration when deciding on recommending the rubber shingling.
Day says the project will essentially replace the entire Capitol roof except the dome portion. An insurance claim has been filed for hail damaged part of the roof. The replacement will take place starting in June of 2024.
