State seeing an increase in prebuilt Governors Houses

SPRINGFIELD, S.D.(WNAX)- A tight housing supply has increased interest in the prebuilt, Governors Houses. Those are built at Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield and transported to sites across the state.

Fred Binder coordinates the program for Planning District Three, a sixteen county area in southeast and southcentral South Dakota. He says there are some income guidelines.

Binder says the homes, which come in two and three bedroom options, are a good fit for a segment of those looking for homes.

Binder says the homes are especially welcome in smaller towns.

Binder says he has taken orders for seventeen new homes since March first. The downside is that delivery could take up to a year.
