State tax on alcohol for counties likely to be considered next year

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KCCR)- One of the few ideas that came before the Study Committee on County Funding and Services to gain unanimous support from the 14-member group is the possible shift of funds collected by the state’s tax on alcoholic beverages.  It’s an idea championed before by Senator Jim Bolin of Canton.

Committee chair Representative Roger Chase of Huron says the impact of alcohol use is far reaching.

Bolin says South Dakota has far more surplus funds than it did in 2017 when the tax was first approved.

Senator David Johnson says the counties cut of the tax should be greater.

The committee will rank all of the suggested that gained approval by the group to develop focus areas for proposed legislation this winter.
