Street to be blocked off for funeral of Hughes County Chief Deputy

PIERRE, S.D. (KCCR) – A large law enforcement presence is expected in Pierre Thursday for the funeral of Hughes County Chief Deputy Lee Weber. As such, Pierre Police Chief Jason Jones brought a street closure request to the Pierre City Commission Tuesday night.

Missouri Avenue will be closed from Poplar Avenue to Central Avenue, a three block stretch from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jones says Weber spent extensive time with the South Dakota National Guard.

Jones also requested the fees normally charged for blocking a street be waived given the nature of and reason for the street closure request. Those fees were waived with the Commission’s approval of the street closure. Weber died July 3 while off-duty when he dove into the Missouri River in an attempt o rescue his 8-year-old son who fell off a moving boat.
