Study lists Aberdeen among the least sober-friendly cities in the US

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – A recent study by IID manufacturing company SMARTSTART listed Aberdeen among the least sober-friendly cities in the country.

For the study, SMARTSTART analyzed 162 cities in the United States, including the 50 biggest cities in the country and the three biggest cities in each state.

Each city was evaluated on:

The number of AA locations per 100,000 residents
The number of drinking establishments per 100,000 residents
The number of snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars per 100,000 residents
The number of treatment and recovery centers per 100,000 residents
The percentage of residents who have participated in binge-drinking in the past 30 days
The percentage of residents who identify as non-drinkers
The average number of sober events each month per 100,000 residents

The study lists Rutland, VT, as the best city for sober living, with Newark, DE, and Jersey City, NJ coming in at second and third.

The study determined that the worst city for sober living is Missoula, Montana, with Madison, Wisconsin, in second and Aberdeen, South Dakota, in third.

Aberdeen was listed as third due to having reported high rates of binge drinking and a lack of recovery resources.

While the study listed Aberdeen as the third-worst city for sober living overall, Aberdeen ranked as the worst city for alcohol recovery resources in the nation.
