STURGIS, S.D.(KBHB) – After another round of discussion, the Sturgis City Council Tuesday night approved on a 5-3 vote approved the Professional Services Contract with American Flat Track Events.
The agreement covers the proposed race to take place on the last day of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this year in the downtown corridor.
The agreement had been tabled earlier this month so council members could get a better look at the contract and its contents.
Despite the added time, those who were in opposition to the race remained in opposition and cast no votes. They were Kevin Forrester, Tony Dargatz and Aaaron Jordan.
Sturgis Council President Beka Zerbst believes this event will benefit the city.
Zerbst says they already have an approximate $400,000 in sponsorship interest.
The race, which will be broadcast on Fox Sports Television, will be held Sunday, August 11.
Race organizers will be back in Sturgis in the next few weeks to talk with city officials, property owners and to study track logistics.
The council Tuesday night also approved a resolution that will establish a wastewater surcharge for the city of Sturgis for new sewer line construction in the Avalanche Road area and officially set April 9 as the date for the change of form of government referendum.
The referendum is a result of the recent Supreme Court decision that the city must hold an election that was initially denied by the city of Sturgis to hold an election concerning whether or not the city should employ a city manager.
