Summer Study on County Funding held meeting in Sioux Falls Wednesday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KELO)- A legislative study committee on county government financing is holding its final session Wednesday.

Some counties are on the brink of insolvency, caught between unfunded state mandated services and legal limits on how much they can raise taxes.

Yankton County Commissioner Dan Klemisch says county governments are in crisis.

Lincoln County Commissioner Jim Schmidt testified that instead of the state trying to fix county problems, county leaders should find solutions of their own.

Codington County Commissioner Lee Gabel talks about ballot measure his county tried to pass in 2017 regarding construction of a jail for the county.

The committee is working to finalize recommendations to present to the 2024 legislature.
