Surplus follows state trend

YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem says the state ended the fiscal year with a just over $19 million surplus.

The surplus was transferred to the budget reserve, which now has about $145 million.

Representative Jean Hunhoff of Yankton, who is vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee, says that roll over follows a trend.

Hunhoff says it seems many parts of state government aim high when they request tax dollars.

Hunhoff says some departments and agencies are not filling all of their authorized jobs.

The interim Appropriations Committee will meet next week to look further into the numbers.
