Suspect arrested after police closed down area in central Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELOLAND) — Sioux Falls Police say they’ve arrested a man accused of threatening officers when they tried to arrest him Tuesday.

Police say the suspect threatened officers with a gun in a central Sioux Falls neighborhood. The incident prompted roads near Lowell Elementary School to be closed as police surrounded a home on Duluth Avenue, which is a couple of blocks away.

As of noon, police had closed off a 10-block area and they brought in barricades to keep the public away. They also flew drones to assist in their efforts to arrest the suspect.

A spokesperson from the Sioux Falls School District says police asked for the school to shelter-in-place due to a situation in the neighborhood. While officers are focused on a home a few blocks away, police were outside Lowell to keep students safe.

The district says a shelter-in-place means students continue with their normal school day but no one is allowed to enter or leave the building.

As of 2:10 p.m., police say the man was arrested and is in custody. They say roads in the area will be open to traffic again shortly.
