ABERDEEN, S.D. (By Elisa Sand esand@aberdeennews.com) – A Sunshine Patch preschool teacher and her nine students are in quarantine after the teacher tested positive for COVID-19 Monday.
Sunshine Patch is a program operated by the Aberdeen Catholic School System. Superintendent Tim Weisz said the teacher was not displaying any symptoms, but had a COVID-19 test done on Friday because she was exposed to someone who tested positive.
She was and continues to be asymptomatic, Weisz said. She will follow a required 10-day quarantine and her students will be in quarantine for 14 days. Tracking of other potential COVID-19 exposures is also underway, he said.
Weisz said each of the preschool cohorts operate independently from one another, and this is a good reason for that setup.
“So, the transmission is certainly less than it would be if all the kids were associating with each other,” he said.
Other preschool classes continue, he said.
Weisz said protocols are in place to deep clean the classroom and this experience will be used as a learning experience for the return of K-12 students at Roncalli schools on Aug. 17.
