Jamestown, ND (NSUWolves.com) – The No. 11 Northern State University wrestling team opened their 2023-24 campaign today at the Jamestown Jimmie Open. The Wolves came away with five weight class wins and eight top-5 placings. Weight class winners for NSU included Landen Fischer (125), Jason Henchel Jr. (133), Braydon Mogle (141), Wyatt Turnquist (149), and Chase Bloomquist (165).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fischer won the 125-pound class with decision victories over Hunter Heim of MSU Moorhead (4-1), Logen Fischer of Minot State (6-5), Jaden Verhagen of UMary (9-8), and Austin Barry of UMary (10-6)
- Henschel Jr. suited up for his first competition as a Wolf and tallied 133-pound wins over Ty Bisek of Concordia (Fall 2:06), Wayne Joint of Minot State (major decision 16-3), and Isaiah Miller of Jamestown (technical fall 16-0)
- Clay Gates added a fourth place finish at 133-pounds going 2-2 with wins over Nelson Anderson (tie breaker, 9-4) and Andrew Ramirez Jr. of Minot State (decision 4-2)
- At 141-pounds, Mogel went 4-0 with victories against Evan Vieria of Minot State (technical fall 15-0), Gabriel Bellefeuille of Concordia (technical fall 17-1), Gabe Mortensen of UMary (decision 4-0), and Ethan Wonser of Minot State (major decision 10-0)
- No. 1 Wyatt Turnquist went 4-0 with wins over Vontrell Calhoun of Minot State (fall 2:00), Cade Rose of MSU Moorhead (technical fall 16-1), Kasius Graham of Minot State (fall 2:05), and Kellen Shauer of Concordia (fall 2:08)
- Chase Bloomquist added a win at 165-pounds, defeating Brody Mohr of Minot State (fall 5:27), Bryson Larrabee (major decision 12-4), Joey Mushinsky of UMary (major decision 10-0), and Sam Bruss of UMary (decision 7-3)
- Spencer Roth took sixth at 165 with wins over Cale Mohan (fall 3:29), Jacob Reinardy of MSU Moorhead (technical fall 21-6), and Jonas Anez of MSU Moorhead (decision 7-6)
- In second at 174-pounds was Mason Fey with victories over Alexander Rapelje of Concordia (fall 4:23) and Wayne Mellon of MSU Moorhead (decision 8-1)
- Sam Kruger tallied 174-pound wins over Khali Vilavong of Jamestown (technical fall 15-0), Treytin Byers (technical fall 17-2, Cooper Ochsendorf of MSU Moorhead (technical fall 15-0), and Anthony Sykore of MSU Moorhead (technical fall 18-2) to take fifth overall
- Kaden Broer took seventh at 174 with wins over Cole Sanderson (injury default), Wayne Mellon of MSU Moorhead (fall 3:00), and Cooper Ochsendorf of MSU Moorhead
- No. 12 Treyton Cacek took second at 184 with wins of Marcus Allen of Minot State (major decision 10-0), Tucker Mugg (fall 0:47), and Cayden White of Minot State (decision 8-2)
- Also at 184, Tyson Lien took fourth going 2-2 with opening victories over Trystan Rogers of Jamestown (major decision 15-7) and Dilon Hammer (fall 3:57)
- Marshall VanTassel took fifth after falling in the first round and notching three straight wins over Isaac Pearce (fall 0:29), Ryan Hirschkorn (decision 8-2), and Jake Rau of Jamestown (technical fall 20-4) at 197-pounds
- In the final weight class of the day Ayden Viox and Nathan Schauer took second and fifth
- Viox defeated Grady Fey (major decision 11-0) and Chance Robinson of Jamestown (fall 6:58)
- Schauer recorded wins over Aden Jorgensen of Jamestown (fall 3:49), Aidyn Mitchell of UMary (decision 7-2), Owen McGillivray (fall 2:02), and Ayden Friese of Concordia (decision 7-3)
