Transgender bill defeated

PIERRE, S.D. (WNAX) – South Dakota House members moved yesterday to add HB1225 to their debate calendar. That bill would have established guidelines to identify a student’s sexual identity for participation in high school athletics. The bill came out of committee with no recommendation.

Republican Representative Marli Wiese (wee-zee) of Madison says the high school activities association could have set a better policy.

Democratic Representative Kelly Sullivan of Sioux Falls says legislators need to move on to more important issues.

The bill failed on a 34 to 34 vote.
