WATERTOWN, S.D.(KWAT)–The president of the South Dakota Postal Worker’s Union is concerned about proposed changes to the Dakota Central Processing and Distribution Center in Huron.
The postal service plans to invest three million dollars in that facility, but change it to a local processing center.
That means many of the mail sorting and processing steps taken in Huron will instead be shifted to a mail processing facility in Fargo.
Todd West spoke with KWAT News about the changes Wednesday. He says a lot of zip codes in eastern South Dakota see their letters go to Huron for processing.
But the postal service plans to change things by trucking the mail north before bringing it back to Dakota Central.
West is concerned that mail delivery times will get longer. The postal service says no employees will lose their job under these changes. West clarifies why.
West says Dakota Central is an efficient operation, and shipping their responsiblities to Fargo doesn’t make sense.
West was asked about the timeline for these changes.
West says if South Dakotans are concerned with these changes, they should contact the offices of Senators Mike Rounds and John Thune and Congressman Dusty Johnson.
