Vaping Ban Killed

PIERRE, S.D. (KJJQ) – The Health and Human Services Committee of the South Dakota Legislature kills a bill that would have banned all flavored vaping products in the state except for menthol and mint.

The bill’s sponsor is Representative Carl Perry of Aberdeen.  He says the flavors appeal to young people.

Among the bill’s opponents is Jason Evans of the South Dakota Department of Revenue. He says the bill would require that the Department become a handler of hazardous waste.

The portion of the bill that allows for the confiscation of flavor-related vaping products also drew concerns about the lack of due process.

Representative Linda Duba of Sioux Falls says she’s very concerned about youth vaping.

The vote was 8-5 to kill the measure.
