Veterans Service Officer Todd Rose reports on progress and benefits for Veterans

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- Codington County Veteran Service Officer Todd Rose provided a monthly update on veterans’ claims and compensation to the County Commissioners, Thursday.

There are 165 open working claims, with 82 pending actions from the VA. So far this year, 145 claims have been successfully completed. Hamlin County has 13 open claims, four pending and nine completed. Additionally, Todd and his team have assisted 18 veterans outside the county, completing 19 claims.

In July 2024, monthly compensation increased by $14,791. Year-to-date, the monthly increase stands at an impressive $85,261. Retro-payments to bring claims up to current monthly compensation have reached $691,392.

Transportation remains a critical service for veterans. In July, three veterans were transported via the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) program. For August, five transports are currently scheduled. Todd also confirmed that Community Transit of Watertown/Sisseton (605-882-5287) continues to provide free rides to veterans within the immediate area and city limits of Watertown for medical appointments. Veterans need to schedule pickups at least one day in advance.

Veteran Transportation Services (VTS) has hired an individual and is expected to be operational by late August 2024. This service will further enhance transportation options for veterans in the area.

The VSO office has been proactive in reaching out to veterans. They recently sent letters to several veterans to ensure awareness of possible state benefits. Veterans receiving a unique monthly code called the “K” Award may be eligible for disabled veteran license plates and a free state park sticker.

Todd emphasized the importance of educating veterans about available benefits.

Todd attended the bridge dedication in Hamlin County on August 2, 2024, honoring PFC John Tuin. He also plans to attend an August Hamlin County Commissioner Meeting to strengthen relationships and address veterans’ needs.

The office will be closed from September 3 to 5 as Todd attends the State Veterans Service Officer (VSO) conference. The work-study program continues, with Julia assisting in updating records and creating a roster.
