Voters turn out in record force for general election

PIERRE, S.D. (DRG News) – With some precincts in Minnehaha County still needing to be counted, 66.7% of the registered voters in South Dakota participated in Tuesday’s general election.

Secretary of State Steve Barnett says around half of the votes were absentee.

Barnett says the credit for the voting process going smoothly overall, goes to election workers.

Constitutional Amendment A is currently passing with a 53% to 47% margin. Barnett doesn’t want to speculate, but also doesn’t anticipate the remaining 71 precincts that need to be counted will be enough to defeat the measure.

Many counties will canvass votes yet this week, making their results official. The Secretary of State’s Office will go through votes and make final determinations on winners next week.
