WATERTOWN, S.D.(KWAT)–The Watertown City Council is recommending SkyWest Airlines be the commercial airline to serve the city starting June 1st.
They made that recommendation Monday night to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The overriding reason for choosing SkyWest over current carrier Denver Air Connection is the full codeshare agreement SkyWest has with four major airlines–Alaska, American, Delta and United.
The codeshare allows a person to buy a single ticket for their entire travel itinerary, even if it’s on multiple airlines.
SkyWest would fly from Watertown to Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul, although they’d need to petition the federal government to get the Twin Cities route because it was not on their original bid.
The vote for SkyWest was 6-1, with Councilman Kyle Peters the lone no vote.
The U.S. DOT makes the final call on which airline will serve Watertown. An announcement is expected in the spring.
