Watertown man charged in officer involved shooting in Yankton

YANKTON, S.D.(KXLG)-  South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley and Yankton County State’s Attorney-Elect Tyler Larsen announced that Andrew Jondahl of Watertown has been indicted on four charges related to an officer-involved shooting that occurred on December 5, 2024, in the Yankton High School parking lot.

Jondahl was indicted on Friday by a Yankton County Grand Jury on the following charges:

  • Two felony counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, each carrying a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
  • One misdemeanor count of Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated, carrying a maximum sentence of one year in county jail.
  • One misdemeanor count of Possession of a Firearm on Public Elementary or Secondary School Premises, also carrying a maximum sentence of one year in county jail.

The indictment follows an investigation by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), which found that the two Yankton Police Officers involved were justified in shooting Jondahl. He presented a clear and present danger to both law enforcement and the public. Jondahl sustained four non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was hospitalized.

Jondahl’s bond is $100,000 unsecured while he remains in a medical facility. Upon his release from the facility, the bond will only convert to $100,000 cash. He is currently hospitalized and will be processed on his warrant at a later date, with his court appearance to be determined. Jondahl is presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution.

The Attorney General’s Office and the Yankton County State’s Attorney’s Office are prosecuting the case.
