Watertown man pleads not guilty to murder charge

WATERTOWN, S.D. (KWAT) — A Watertown man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of Second Degree Murder. Forty year-old Jeremiah Peacemaker is accused of killing 28-year-old Kendra Owen at her Watertown residence.

Owen’s body was found the evening of Sept. 2. Police said it appeared she had been dead for several days.

Peacemaker was arrested the following morning.

At a press briefing announcing Peacemaker’s arrest, Watertown Police Detective Sergeant Chad Stahl said there were numerous signs of trauma on Owen’s body. An autopsy was conducted, but a cause of death has not been announced.

Defense attorney Scott Bratland says Peacemaker entered his not guilty plea during a court hearing Wednesday. His jury trial is scheduled to begin on Jan. 28, 2021.

He remains in jail on $1 million cash-only bond.

Police have not described in detail the relationship between the suspect and victim, only saying that they appeared to be, “recent acquaintances.”
