Watertown man sentenced 25 years for attempted murder charges

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KWAT)–A Watertown man was sentenced Wednesday on charges of Attempted First Degree Murder and First Degree Burglary for a violent crime that occurred last August.

Marcus Weber (pictured) showed up at the female victim’s residence in a premeditated manner, and attempted to kill her by dragging the victim out of the home by her throat and stomping on her face.

The victim, identified in court documents with the initials D.W., was bleeding profusely from the face when medical personnel arrived, and sustained catostrophic injuries.

She was in court for Wednesday’s sentencing to read a victim impact statement. She told a packed courtroom that Weber no longer has control over her, and spoke of how a longstanding abusive relationship with him had developed.

Weber pleaded guilty to the charges in January. He spoke briefly in court Wednesday, apologizing for what happened, and said he must take responsibility for his actions.

Judge Carmen Means said the case demonstrated a very clear cycle of violence, and that it was a textbook situation where the victim made a decision to finally stand up for herself.

Judge Means sentenced Weber to 25 years in prison on the Attempted Murder charge, with credit for 214 days spent in jail.

On the Burglary charge, Weber was given 25 years in prison, with 15 years suspended.

The sentences will run consecutively.
