Watertown police warns citizens about scam involving nude photos

WATERTOWN, S.D.(KXLG)- Watertown Police Department is warning the public of online and mobile scams. Reports indicate that in multiple cases, individuals have been manipulated into sending money to prevent the leak of sent nude photos.

W.P.D. stated when the cases were reported in January, some included paying over $10,000.

According to the report, W.P.D. says, “These scams typically originate overseas and are very difficult to investigate/charge through local law enforcement. The Watertown Police Department would like to remind citizens to use caution on social media. Suspects will generate fake accounts to gain people’s trust, acquire information or photos, and turn around and threaten to post photos/information to receive money.”

In most cases, these suspects will continue to request money and threaten to post the photos. The F.B.I. has an online reporting site for internet crimes www.IC3.gov
