Wolves Go Winless On Road in NSIC Play

ROCHESTER, MN (NSUWolves.com) [FRI] – Northern State lost at the hands of Winona State in both doubleheaders to start NSIC play. The Wolves fell 15-7 in the first game and 10-0 in the second game, tallying seven runs and 11 hits across both games.

GAME ONE: WINONA STATE 15, NORTHERN STATE 7

  • After trailing 10-2 at the start of the fifth inning, Northern State rallied, recording five runs on four hits in the top of the fifth, featuring a pair of home runs from Tevan Bryant and Sydney Anderson, before Winona State responded with five runs of their own to take the game, 15-7
  • The Wolves recorded seven runs, seven hits, seven RBIs, one double, two home runs and three errors in the outing
  • NSU struggled in the first inning, striking out in their first three at-bats at the top of the inning and allowing five runs in the bottom of the inning
  • Tevan Bryant etched the first run of the game in the second, sending a ball over the right-field fence
  • Corina Coppersmith (walk) and Kennedy Boyer (single) found themselves on base in the inning, but the Wolves were unable to secure any more runs, stranding two runners on the bags
  • After Tevan Bryant took first by way of a walk, Coppersmith sent Brooke Wolf (pinch runner for the designated player) to second via a sacrifice bunt
  • In the following at-bat, Anderson sent one deep into center, and Wolf turned on the jets, rounding third to add another run for Northern
  • The Warriors were stellar at the plate in the fourth, recording five hits for four runs, extending their lead to 10-2
  • After Kinsley Stovdr singled at the top of the fifth, the Wolves quickly tallied two outs, with Alicia Jeanson and Aune Boben both flying out to the outfield
  • Ahead in the count, Madi Jones found herself on base before Alysa Lowe came in to pinch run, but Tevan Bryant made quick work in the following at-bat, sending another ball over the fence for her second home run of the game
  • With Coppersmith on base again, Anderson, similar to Tevan Bryant, recorded a two-RBI home run to put the game within three runs
  • But Winona State kept momentum from the inning before and notched five runs to end the game in five innings
  • Riley O’Connell was credited with the loss, leaving the game after the second out of the first inning
  • Both Tess Miller and Dessa Bryant relieved the freshman, with all NSU pitchers allowing five runs each

  • At the plate with a full count, Whitley Wischmeier found herself on base by way of a walk before Alyssa Woelfel racked an RBI single, bringing her teammate home for the first run of the game
  • Winona State would put two more on the bags before Bryn Elsenpeter sent one over the fence in right field to put three more runs on the board
  • After the Wolves went three up, three down at the top of the fourth, the Warriors picked right back up where they left off in the third, notching six runs in the inning
  • Though the Wolves put a runner on the bases in the fifth, the scoreless half inning ended the game
  • Mckenzie Wanner tallied four strikeouts in the game while pitching for 3.2 innings before O’Connell finished the game

GAME ONE: MINNESOTA STATE 5, NORTHERN STATE 4

  • The Wolves took the Mavericks to eight innings in game one of the doubleheader, tallying four runs, eight hits, four RBIs, one home run, one double and one error
  • After leading MSU for an inning, the Mavericks tied the game up with a two-run inning at the bottom of the sixth before recording the game-winner in the eighth on an RBI single
  • Tevan Bryant started off the second inning on fire, recording a home run to right center to take an early 1-0 lead, her third homer of the weekend
  • The Mavericks fought back in the third, filling the bags and recording two runs in the inning via a walk and a sac fly.
  • In the fifth, Northern State was hot at the plate, notching three runs on four hits in the inning
  • Hailey Cota and Alicia Jeanson started off with back-to-back singles before Aune Boben racked an RBI single, sending Cota home
  • The following at-bat, Madi Jones sent one to the outfield to allow Jeanson to touch the plate for an RBI double
  • After a Tevan Bryant walk to load the bases, Corina Coppersmith took one to the body, bringing in Boben for the third and final run of the game for Northern State
  • With runners on second and third, Finley Anderson reached first on an error, allowing both base runners to make it home to tie the game at 4-4
  • Only one extra inning was needed as the Mavericks brought home leadoff hitter Chloe Brandt on a single to the outfield to take game one

  • Fresh off their extra-innings victory in the game before, the Mavericks brought their momentum into game two, chalking four runs at the bottom of the first
  • The Wolves and Mavericks both went scoreless through innings two and three before MSU tacked on two more in the fourth
  • Hailey Cota stepped up to the plate at the top of the fifth and, with an even 1-1 count, sent one over the fence and notched NSU’s only run of the game
  • The Mavericks would cap off the game in the fifth, snagging four more hits and three runs in the inning to end the game early
  • Tess Miller threw for a team-high 3.1 innings in the game, allowing three runs and recording NSU’s only strikeout at the rubber
