Wolves SB Weekend Recap

Clermont, Fla. (NSUWolves.com) – The Northern State University softball team opened THE Spring Games with a Friday split versus Wheeling Jesuit and Saint Rose. The Wolves defeated WJU and fell to STR, moving to 4-2 overall this season.

GAME 1 – WHEELING JESUIT
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first frame.
  • Madison Rutter answered back scoring Rachel Reinke on a single up the middle in the top off the second.
  • WJU extended their lead with two more runs in the second and third.
  • Jamie Fisher singled to left center in the top of the fourth, scoring Sara Bendt and Courtney Sjerven who singled to left and walked in the inning.
  • Jen Martin came up big with a grand slam in the top of the sixth, a blast to centerfield. Sjerven, Julia Sullwold, and Cassidy Schaar (pinch running for Kennady Thompson) all scored on the play after reaching base via a walk, a single, and a single.
  • The Wolves recorded seven runs on 13 hits, with two errors on defense.

NORTHERN STATE STATISTICAL STANDOUTS

  • Jen Martin: 3-for-4, 1 run, 4 RBI, grand slam
  • Rachel Reinke: 2-for-4, 1 run, double
  • Madison Rutter: 2-for-4, 1 RBI

GAME 2 – SAINT ROSE
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Golden Knights nabbed the first three runs of the game in the top of the second inning.
  • Madison Rutter tied things at 3-all in the bottom of the fourth with a long ball to left center field. Rachel Reinke and Kaitlyn King scored on the play, after hitting back-to-back singles to open the inning.
  • Sara Bendt followed with a single through the left side and was plated on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Cassidy Schaar, which tied the game at four.
  • A 5-walk sixth inning gave Saint Rose the lead, and the Golden Knights tacked on another run in the top of the seventh.
  • Northern tallied four runs on eight hits and did not give up an error.

Clermont, Fla. (NSUWolves.com) – The Northern State University softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 1 Southern Indiana and Georgian Court Saturday afternoon. Southern Indiana entered the game as the defending NCAA Division II National Champions. With the two losses, the Wolves drop to 1-3 from THE Spring Games.

GAME 1 – SOUTHERN INDIANA
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The No. 1 Screaming Eagles scored early and often notching two runs in the second, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and five in the seventh.
  • Courtney Sjerven spoiled the USI starters no hitter that was running through fifth inning with a 2-out single up the middle.
  • Sjerven, along with Anne Jonas scored on the following at-bat off a Cassidy Schaar double down the left field line.
  • Northern tallied two runs on two hits with five errors defensive. Andrea Cherney started the contest and gave up just one earned run despite suffering the loss.

  • Cassidy Schaar: 1-for-2, 2 RBI, double

GAME 2 – GEORGIAN COURT
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams were scoreless through the first two innings, but Georgian Court broke things open in the bottom of the third with five runs.
  • The Lions added another run in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Wolves recorded six hits and did not give up an error defensively, but left six runners on base in the game.
  • Fisher suffered the loss on the mound, giving up six earned runs on eight hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

Kissimmee, Fla. (NSUWolves.com)  – The Northern State University softball dropped fell in two contests Sunday afternoon versus Walsh University and Trevecca Nazarene. The Wolves are now 1-5 from THE Spring Games, with six games left to play.

GAME 1 – WALSH
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Walsh University scored first in the top of the second with one run, before the Wolves answered back and tied things in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Kennady Thompson blasted her second homerun of the season a long ball to deep left field.
  • The Cavaliers connected for a long ball of their own in the top of the fifth, taking a 3-1 lead over NSU. They added two more runs in the following inning.
  • Thompson grabbed her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Sara Bendt on a sacrifice fly to left. Bendt led off the inning with a single through the right side.
  • Northern recorded two runs on nine hits, with one error on defense.
  • Jamie Fisher suffered her third loss of the season, throwing 5.1 innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits, with five walks and two strikeouts.

GAME 2 – TNU
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Wolves were behind early, as Trevecca Nazarene notched one run in their first at-bats of the game. The Trojans then extended their lead in the third with one run on a no out single through the right side.
  • Northern took their first lead of the day in the top off the fourth, notching three runs.
  • Shayla Steinley scored on single by Anne Jonas, with Emma Terveer and Lauryn Bos also scored on the play on an error by the second basemen.
  • Steinley and Terveer were pinch running for Jen Martin and Makenzie Merritt who singled and walked in the inning.
  • The Trojans retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Wolves were unable to answer back.
  • Northern tallied three runs on five hits, with one error defensively.
  • Makenzie Merritt suffered her first loss of the season, throwing 6.0 complete innings with five earned runs on eight hits.
