Wolves Softball Weekend Recap

Winter Haven, FL (NSUWolves.com) [FRI] – A game one loss and game two victory was the story of the morning for the Northern State University softball team. The Wolves fell to Bentley University in a 1-run match-up, and rallied back for a 13-run win over Saint Michael’s to close out their Friday slate.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. BENTLEY

  • The Falcons took an early lead scoring two runs in the top of the first
  • Northern cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third with an Elly Smith double to left center scoring Claire Zbylut
  • Bentley tacked on their third and final run in the following frame
  • Taylor Coleman scored for the Wolves in the bottom of the fifth, on a single to left by Liv Richardson, however NSU was unable to tie the contest in the following two frames
  • Northern scored their two runs on eight hits with one error
  • Richardson and Smith led the offense with two hits a piece
  • Abby Rux suffered her second loss of 2024 despite a solid outing, giving up just three earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. SAINT MICHAEL’S COLLEGE

  • Northern struck first with four runs in the top of the first inning by Ashley Fauske on a Claire Zbylut single to left, Taylor Coleman on a ground out by Liv Richardson, and Elly Smith and Zbylut on a single up the middle by Avarie Eagle
  • Kyra Knudtson extended the lead in the fourth, scoring on a sacrifice fly to left by Fauske
  • The flood gates opened in the seventh, as the Wolves scored eight runs on nine hits
  • Scoring for NSU in the seventh was Brooke Carlson, Coleman, Zbylut, Brooke Wolf, Eden Ford, Kamdyn Barrientos, and Knudtson
  • In total, Northern state racked up 13 runs on 18 hits with just one defensive miscue
  • Mckenzie Wanner threw a complete game shutout, giving up just three hits and striking out three in her fourth win of 2024
  • Coleman and Zbylut led the offensive attack for NSU with four and three hits respectively, combining for four runs scored, three RBI, and three extra base hits

Winter Haven, FL (NSUWolves.com) [SAT] – The Northern State University softball team went 1-1 in their final two games from Florida with a loss to Shepherd and win against Wayne State University. The Wolves went 6-4 in their ten games from the Sunshine State and will open NSIC play next weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. SHEPHERD

  • Kyra Knudtson kicked off the scoring for the Wolves in the top of the second, with a solo homerun to center
  • The Rams tied the contest in the bottom of the frame and added a pair of runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, taking a 5-1 lead
  • Liv Richardson added a run in the sixth off the bat of Knudtson, however the Wolves weren’t able to come up with the difference
  • Shepherd sealed the 6-2 game score in the bottom of the sixth with their final run
  • Knudtson and Lexi Chase led the offense with two hits apiece
  • Mckenzie Wanner suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs on nine hits

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY

  • Claire Zbylut scored the lone run of the contest in the third for the Wolves on a single through the left side by Avarie Eagle
  • Northern tallied their one run on five hits, and did not give up an error defensively
  • Eagle led the team offensively, going 2-for-2 at the plate
  • Lexi Chase led the team in the circle, tossing a 5-inning shutout with four strikeouts
