Wolves Swept By #25 Augustana Over Weekend

Aberdeen, SD (NSUWolves.com) [SAT] – Northern State baseball hosted Augustana in an NSIC series Saturday, April 11. The Wolves took game one to extra innings after being down nine runs; game two was a defensive battle.

GAME ONE: NSU 11, AU 12

  • The Wolves got out to a large deficit early, going down 9-0 after four; the Vikings scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth
  • In what looked to be a blowout of a game, Northern stormed back with four runs coming in the bottom of the fifth
    • Collin Lott and Andrew Niaves got on base with a hit by pitch, Dylan Soulek was walked to load the bases and Easton Rerick was walked to bring Lott in for NSU’s first run
    • A throwing error led to a Niaves touching home
    •  Dillon Castellanos batted Soulek home and Rerick crossed the plate on a Mateo Tahsini double; Augustana on top 9-4
  • A Viking three-up-three-down put the Wolves back on offense; Drew Benson homered to left field on the first at bat of the sixth, bringing the score to 9-5 AU
  • Augustana added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning with two runs
  • With two outs, the Wolves rally back, scoring six runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings
    • Benson batted home Castellanos to start the comeback
    • A double by Lott sent Danny Sanchez and Benson home
    • Batting in Lott and Niaves was Jack Weidner’s double to right center, brining the Wolves within one
    • Rerick came up to the plate and singled it down the right field line; Kyle Konechne (pinch running for Weidner) stepped home and tied the game 11-11
  • No action in the eighth took us to the top of the nineth inning where a sacrifice fly brought in the winning run for Augustana

  • This pitching battle of a game saw no runs and only five combined hits (3 NSU, 2 AU) through the first five innings
  • Augustana got on the board first in the fifth with two runs
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Drew Benson kicked things off with a double to center; he advanced to third on an Easton Rerick ground out
  • With two outs Dillon Castellanos brough Benson home to make it 2-1 Vikings
  • Northern State comes up short, leaving four runners on base after Augustana took the lead

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Vikings came out swinging, hitting a home run on the third pitch of the game; they put eight runs on the board in the first, making it through their full lineup
  • The Wolves went three-up-three-down in the first inning
  • Seven more AU runs came home in the second, all were scored with two outs
  • Northern got their first run of the game as Colling Lott homered to right center
  • Two more runs in the third extended Augie’s lead to 17-1
  • With bases loaded in the third, Lott was hit by a pitch, bringing Kyle Konechne home
  • Jordan Hull brought Easton Rerick and Konechne in to make the score 17-4 Vikings
  • Carter Sommer retired three straight batters in the top of the sixth to get Northern’s offense back out
  • Augustana scored two more runs to wrap up the game in seven
