Wolves Swept By CSP & SCSU

ABERDEEN, SD (NSUWolves.com) [SAT] – The Wolves were upended in both of their doubleheaders against the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul today, falling 3-2 in the first game and 6-2 in the second.

GAME ONE: CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL 3, NORTHERN STATE 2
The Wolves tallied two runs, five hits, one RBI, one error, one strikeout on the mound, 21 putouts and 10 assists in their 3-2 loss to the Golden Bears
CSP quickly got the bats going in the top of the second, securing three runs, two of which were RBI doubles from Katie Klotz and Ava Blake, with Ashlyn Peterson clocking an RBI single to give the Golden Bears a 3-0 jump
But their luck was short-lived as Concordia-St. Paul gave up multiple errors in the bottom of the second and went scoreless for the remainder of the game
First, Corina Coppersmith reached first on an error before taking second on another
With one of Northern State’s best hitters at the plate in Sydney Anderson, a routine groundout turned into a throwing error, giving Anderson first and bringing Coppersmith home for the last score of the inning
The matchup stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Tevan Bryant sent the ball right to the first baseman, recording the second out of the inning but also an RBI to bring the game within one
In the sixth inning, Northern State had an opportunity to at least tie the game with runners on second and third, but recorded two consecutive outs to end the inning
After containing CSP in the top of the seventh, NSU had a three-up, three-down inning to seal the game at 3-2 in favor of the Golden Bears

GAME TWO: CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL 6, NORTHERN STATE 2
In Northern State’s second loss of the day, the team notched two runs, six hits, two RBIs, two errors, 21 putouts and 14 assists
Similar to Game 1, Concordia-St. Paul put three runs on the board early in the game, this time all in the first, as the Golden Bears came out ready, notching one hit, two batters hit by pitches and a walk to start the game
Blake’s double brought in two runs, while Klotz tallied an RBI on the first run scored in the inning
CSP added one run in each of the next two innings before its first scoreless inning in the fourth
The Wolves recorded both of their runs in the fifth inning, with two outs already recorded
After a groundout from Hailey Cota and an Emma Owens popout to the pitcher, Kennedy Boyer singled down the right-field line to put a Wolf on the bases
Alicia Jeanson followed it up with a single of her own before a passed ball advanced both runners to second and third
With Aune Boben at the plate, the sophomore singled down the left-field line to bring in both teammates and score NSU’s only runs of the game
Concordia-St. Paul tacked on one more run in the sixth to extend its winning streak to six

GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERISTY 4, NORTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY 1

  • Northern State’s one run in the seventh wasn’t enough to cut the four-run deficit St. Cloud State had from the fifth, as the Wolves recorded one run, four hits, one RBI, two errors, 21 putouts, five assists and three strikeouts on the mound to lose 4-1
  • Both teams started hot in the field, amounting to 13 at-bats, three strikeouts and nine putouts in the first two innings for both teams
  • The Huskies chalked the board first with a Hannah Harms solo shot over the fence in left-center with two down at the top of the third
  • After the Wolves left a runner on base in the bottom of the fourth, SCSU turned on the jets, recording three runs on three hits and two errors in the fifth, leaving three stranded on the bags
  • Two scoreless innings later, Northern State found itself down four in the seventh
  • After a walk from Tevan Bryant (Emma Owens in to pinch run), a Sydney Anderson single to left put her on first and Owens on second
  • With Corina Coppersmith at the plate, a wild pitch advanced both runners for Coppersmith to send a sacrifice fly deep into center to bring Owens in for one
  • The Wolves were unable to add more and fell 4-1 in the first game

GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY 7, NORTHERN STATE UNIVERISTY 2

  • The Wolves notched two runs, eight hits, two RBIs, a double, two errors, 24 putouts and 18 assists in their 7-2 loss to the Huskies
  • After tying the game 1-1 in the sixth, Northern State struggled in extra innings, giving up six runs and six hits in the eighth to fall 7-1 with three outs remaining
  • With the bases loaded off an Alicia Jeanson walk, an Aune Boben single and a Madi Jones single, Bryant sent a stripe down the right-field line to bring Jeanson home and to keep the Wolves alive with one to go
  • The rally quickly came to a halt after Anderson lined out to third base to end the game
  • Huskies’ infielder Grace Frechette recorded a single in the second and advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball before a Harms sac fly brought her home
  • A Bryant single to right tied the game for the Wolves in the sixth, which sent Boben, who doubled in the inning, around the diamond
