Woman charged with neglect after death of a dog left in a hot car

BROOKINGS, S.D.(KJJQ)- Brookings police investigate the death of a dog that was left in a hot car for several hours on Monday.

Detective Adam Smith says a 20-year-old woman, staying at a Brookings residence, put the dog in the vehicle around 5:00 AM. The woman fell asleep and didn’t check on the dog until 2:00 PM. The dog was found dead inside the hot vehicle. It had no water and the windows were all rolled up.

Law enforcement wasn’t contacted until Tuesday after the Golden Lab had been transported outside of city limits and buried.

Misdemeanor charges are pending against the twenty-year-old female for neglect, abandonment, or mistreatment of an animal.
