Written CDL tests to be offered by appointment only Saturday at Pierre, Mitchell, Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Watertown

People wanting to take the written tests required to obtain a Commercial Driver License before new federal regulations take effect can do so Saturday at six locations statewide.

State Driver Licensing program director Jane Schrank says the federal Entry Level Driver Training requirements begin Feb. 7, 2022.

Schrank says state driver licensing offices can administer the CDL test any day they’re regularly open, but the state wanted to offer more opportunities for people to get or add endorsements ahead of next month’s rule change.

When you come to your testing appointment, Schrank says you need to bring some paperwork with you.

Appointments for CDL written testing only also are available Saturday at driver exam stations in Aberdeen, Mitchell, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Watertown. (Appointments can also be made by calling 605-773-6883.) Drivers who pass the CDL written tests and are issued their commercial learner’s permit before Feb. 7 will be exempt from the new training requirements.
