Yankton City Manager says regulation of marijuana will fall to local governments

YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) – With two marijuana ballot issues being approved this week, the next step will be for the South Dakota legislature to write the rules needed to implement the sale and use of medicinal and recreational marijuana.

The ultimate regulation will fall to local governments. Yankton City Manager Amy Leon says there will need to be a lot of discussions, which they have already started.

Leon says the municipal league will also be involved in the guidelines.

Leon says she hopes cities are given broad authority.

Leon says she hopes the regulations are not modeled on liquor laws which she says are very complicated and technical.
