Yankton School Board vote not to mandate masks at the start of the school year

YANKTON, S.D.(WNAX)- The Yankton School Board heard almost two hours of sometimes emotional public comments about their face mask policy at their meeting Monday night.

Face masks were mandated for students and staff for the last school year.

Saying it was a very difficult issue, member Kathy Greeneway made a motion.

Board Member Terry Crandall said he was sad to see the issue become political, but supported the resolution.

Board President, Dr Jill Sternquist said it has been a challenging time.

The resolution passed on a three to two vote, with Greeneway, Crandall and Frani Kieffer supporting it, Sternquist and Sarah Carda (sar-da) voted no.

The board will review the policy at each of their monthly meetings.
