LAKE ANDES, S.D. (WNAX) – The Yankton Sioux Tribe is asking Governor Kristi Noem and the State of South Dakota to do something to help with flooding from Lake Andes.
The lake has risen substantially since the March storms and flooded Highways 18 – 281 and 50.
The tribe is asking the state to help reopen the outflow culvert on the lake so levels can drop.
Representative Lee Qualm of Platte says opening the culvert is not an easy fix.
The state Transportation Department is planning to raise the highway to get it reopened. Qualm says that is one thing that can be done fairly quickly.
Qualm says the Governors office is aware and been involved in the situation.
The tribe says over 60 families have been flooded out or suffered damages from the long-term high water.
